Background: Fear first appeared in 1979. The organization orchestrated multiple attacks upon Big City during a 7-year period. Furies' first case focused upon a crime rampage by the group's archer, Black Feather.
Purpose: World domination
Leader: Vertigo
Members: Psi-Arm, Veil, Black Feather, Demolition Man, Hornet, Worg, Vector, DeadEye
Former members: Big Time, Disc (d), The Unstoppable Man
Support: Fear had a seemingly-inexhaustable cadre of trained agents.
Tactics: Fear usually attacked in force, lead by Vertigo's mind-numbing mental blasts. Any success against the group is predicated on stopping him.
Recent Activity: None. The last confirmed activity by the Fear organization occured in 1985, although individual members were encountered by Furies in 1986 and 1991.
SUMMARY OF ENCOUNTERS
1979
Fear makes its presence known across the United States - raiding military installations for weaponry, robbing banks for cash and attacking police departments for fun and intimidation. The group enjoys a firm grip of terror upon several major cities, and is growing.
Fear abducts, brainwashes and experiments upon Big City police officer Paul Hamner, inadvertenly spawning Sledgehammer.
1980
In Furies' first case, Grey Arrow and Nucleon halt a crime spree by Black Feather. The skirmish is caught on national television, in which Black Feather takes a female newscaster hostage and barters for freedom. Although Grey Arrow agrees he can go in exchange for the woman's safety, Black Feather slashes her throat and grabs a new victim. Grey Arrow opens fire, hitting Black Feather in the throat and saving the second victim. Black Feather is jailed for 2 years and his voice still reflects the damage to his vocal chords.
Fear immediately disappears from public view. Professor Clue accurately surmises the group plans to marshal its forces for future, strategic attacks against its chief rival - Furies.
1981
White Cobra tracks a disguised Vertigo to Big City's Southside Shopping Mall, where Cobra is mentally assaulted and goes berzerk. Snowstorm and Grey Arrow respond to the scene, with Snowstorm leveling an entire sporting goods store to clobber Vertigo, and Arrow grappling with Cobra.
1982
Fear invades Furies, and attempt to capture Grey Arrow and substitute Black Feather in the confusion. The attack is repelled largely due to the efforts of White Cobra.
Worg attacks Grey Arrow on the streets of Big City, shredding his bow and kevlar-reinforced costume. Arrow evades serious injury, and begins using Black Feather's bow he obtained two years earlier.
1983
DeadEye, backed by a squad of 6 Fear agents, robs Big City's First National Bank and is intercepted by Emerald and Snowstorm. DeadEye kills 3 policemen in the robbery, and the heroes respond by first breaking (Snowstorm) and then amputating (Emerald) DeadEye's right arm during the fracas. The limb is surgically re-attached and, two months later, DeadEye escapes from Big City Prison's medical ward.
Fear ambushes Captain Wonder in Big City Park, utilizing dozens of trained agents. Wonder saves hundreds of bystanders from injury, but is himself wounded in the assault by Disc. The incident is believed to have been staged to measure Wonder’s power. Spark is mentally dominated by Vertigo during the incident, and some speculate he never fully recovered.
Furies track Black Feather back to a Big City warehouse being used as a Fear base. Guardian II rips the hatch off the building’s roof, triggering a shaped nuclear detonation that obliterates him and seriously wounds several of his teammates. Black Feather is not found.
Professor Clue and Captain Fury discover Big Time and DeadEye breaking into the 23rd floor of a DuroTech office building, in search of classified documents pertaining to a new laser weapon. Professor Clue blinds DeadEye by tinkering with a photocopier, and Big Time later pummels Captain Fury with the same piece of equipment. Big Time and Professor Clue ultimately tumble out a window, with Big Time saving them both by grabbing a passing ledge.
Snowstorm and Silver Serpent encounter Big Time and DeadEye in another DuroTech facility. Serpent knocks DeadEye out the 19th floor, where he plummets to his apparent death. At the end of the scuffle, however, only a puddle of blood is found on the ground below.
Silver Serpent attempts to apprehend DeadEye in a Big City neighborhood, and is shot and killed. When Iron Guard responds to the incident, a tri-onically enhanced DeadEye topples him with a laser barrage and captures his Mark III battle armor. A villain emerges in Big City a few months later, wearing the armor and calling himself Dreadnought.
SHIFT's Cyclone, Mindshadow, Sub-Micronian and Inviant are attacked as they discover a covert Fear base operating on the docks of San Francisco. Vertigo disables the heroes, and Fear abandons the base.
1984
After Sledgehammer dies in the line of duty, Big Time renounces his Fear membership and joins Furies. Vertigo promises retribution.
Fear attacks the Big City federal reserve. Several Furies respond, and the battle concludes with Seeker slamming a hiding Vertigo through two floors of an apartment building. Vertigo is jailed for 6 years.
1985
Alpha Prime and Polestar uncover a Fear base operating in Washington, D.C. Alpha Prime is captured and his shield taken during the confrontation. A weapon using classified metals technology, the shield remains in their possession for six months.
Seeker and Shocker halt a robbery of Big City's Third National Bank by 4 masked gunmen. Seeker disarms several of them using the force from his ring. Shocker attempts the same manuever with substanially more force, and nearly separates one man's arm from his body. The criminal, revealed to be DeadEye, angrily grabs a hostage and demands his freedom. He vows revenge upon Shocker and all other heroes who have injured him.
1986
DeadEye lures Shocker to the Big City Hilton, hiring mercenary supervillain Ferret to pose as a newspaper reporter wanting to interview him. Shocker is thrown into the lobby pool and is nearly drowned by the pair, but is rescued by an unidentified woman who side-kicks DeadEye into the pool himself.
DeadEye is captured, and Wizard magically removes the tri-onic components from his body. DeadEye claims his poor fortunes prompted his crime spree, and says he will cause Furies no more trouble. He is jailed for 12 years.
1991
Several villains attack the Big City Arena during a charity pro-wrestling match featuring Big Time. Disc, one of the assailants, is fatally wounded by Moonsword during the scuffle.
2000
Fear infiltrates Furies. Black Feather, Vertigo, Psi-Arm and two agents pass themselves off as Grey Arrow, Wizard, Seeker, Miss America and Iron Maiden, respectively. Over several days, they download data from the Furies computer and trick the group into accepting a new security system and communication devices. Fear also engineers separate ambushes upon Cyclone and Furies alumni Grey Arrow, Klaxon, Nucleon, Emerald, Snowstorm and Black Widow. Widow and Cyclone are captured, and as of this writing have not been heard from since.
Vertigo disrupts an appearance by Furies and Guardians at the UN, unveiling a toxin that will destroy the world's crops unless he is declared ruler of the world and paid $1 billion per day. A fight ensues - hundreds of bystanders are wounded by Vertigo's mental barrage, and a delegate is killed by Furies’ own Extreme. The toxin ravages millions of acres in South Africa, China and the central United States.
Furies veteran Snowstorm discovers a Fear base in the Antarctic, and leads the Guardians (Moonsword, Shamrock, Interceptor, Iron Cross, Phoenix, Starman, X-Ray) on a raid of the base. Data retrieved from the base's computer allows Dr Enigma to develop an antidote to the Fear toxin. Demolition Man participates in the battle, but is not taken into custody.
The faux Furies are finally detected by Whiz Kid. In separate incidents, 4 of the 5 imposters are dealt with - "Miss America" offers no resistance and is arrested, Psi-Arm is captured, Vertigo is banished to another dimension by Dr. Enigma, and finally Black Feather is captured by Whiz Kid after brawling with the real but ring-less Seeker. The "Iron Maiden" imposter slips away in the confusion.
