The Investigation Begins

Furies' leader Shocker is contacted by the staff at STELLAR labs, who inform him that a patient in their care was recently imbued with super powers after being knocked into an industrial waste pit by The Crew. Shocker visits the man and encourages him to use his new powers to fight evil. Considering Furies membership, the man adopts the hero name "Heavy Metal" and somewhat hesitantly begins to adapt to his new role in life.

In response to a string of bizarre killings in Innsmith, a small coastal town in Maine, Shocker sends a Furies team to investigate. This "away team" consists of Miss America, Icestar, Talisman, Whiz Kid and Heavy Metal.

The team arrives in Innsmith and begins their investigation. They quickly discover that the victims, all killed at the height of the full moon, seem to be people who possess some latent psychic ability, and that they were killed in order starting with the most powerful. Determined to prevent another killing, the heroes set up a protective watch at the lighthouse where the next most likely victim, a fifteen year old boy named Adam Turner, lives with his family.

    Protecting Number 4

As the heroes and the Turner family are settling in for the night, they are suddenly attacked. Appearing out of thin air and fiercely determined to press home their lethal attack, nine creatures who look exactly like Jem Ha'dar enter combat with the heroes. A brief but intense skirmish follows. The heroes are caught off guard, but they quickly recover, and although Talisman is briefly knocked unconscious the heroes make short work of their opponents. The boy and his family are safe, and the lighthouse has suffered only minor damage in the scuffle. The Jem Ha'dar all melt away into a puddle of blue-black goo, and otherwise only leave behind a small black sphere where they fell. These marble-like spheres are examined, and when magical symbols are discovered to be engraved on them a connection is made to a local church in the town proper. The heroes begin investigating this church, named The Esoteric Order of Dagon, as well as an island in the town's harbor. The island has what is reputed to be a haunted house on it, and the players discover some unusual clues there. Heavy Metal, shaken by his first super combat, is given the task of escorting the Turners to Furies headquarters for safekeeping.

    Stopping A Monster

As the investigations continue, the heroes become more convinced of the Order's involvement and that something odd is going on out at the island house. While their search of the church and a few "fly-by's" of the island reveal little, they nevertheless remain convinced that the order is somehow responsible for the killings. Icestar 's attempts to buy the island outright are swiftly rebuffed by the property holders, H&B Realty.

The heroes find some more clues. The USS Maine was sunk on the same day the house on the island was destroyed, and the planetary alignments were exactly then as they are now. They discover more moon magic connections, and determine that the most likely time for mayhem will be at 11:30 that evening.

As the heroes operate a stake-out of the Order's church, they prepare to head for the island shortly after 11 p.m. Miss America discovers at this moment that the moon's position had changed quite suddenly, and a check of her watch shows a half hour of time missing: it's now 11:29.

The heroes rush to the island and discover that a dark ritual is nearly over. They see a ring of hooded acolytes led by the Order's seemingly innocent church receptionist, who now is in her true form, bat wings and all! There is a dying man (another psychic) in the center of the circle upon an altar, his throat freshly torn apart. As he falls dead a thunderclap is heard, followed by a swirling of light and darkness. A large, amorphous energy creature appears, light flashing erratically from its malevolent form. The heroes attack.

The acolytes scatter as Miss America and Whiz Kid attack Blackwing, the one who led the ritual. She dodges their first attacks and grabs Whiz Kid, who shreiks in terrible agony as half of his life force is violently wrenched from his body. Miss America flings her shield at Blackwing, knocking her back from the badly injured Whiz Kid. Together, they quickly subdue the evil woman. Meanwhile, Talisman and Icestar are engaged in combat with the nebulous energy creature, Incindiarite. Their attacks seem to have little effect on it, and while it damages them easily they at least seem fortunate not to receive any serious wounds. As it moves about and fires several arcing energy charges, it kills several of the hapless acolytes who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Miss America and Whiz Kid join the fray against Incindiarite, and the creature swirls into a whirling tempest of energy. There is a blinding white flash of light and another thunderclap, and the creature is gone.

Their foes beaten, the heroes gather Blackwing and the surviving acolytes and hand them over to the local police. The away team returns home, tired and bruised but triumphant.
