Furies

    Background

Furies was founded in 1986 by Paul 'Sledge' Hamner. Earlier that year Hamner, a Big City police officer, had been captured and drugged by the criminal organization Fear. Fear’s leader, Vertigo, hoped to push Hamner’s physical capabilities beyond those of a normal human and use him as a weapon against law enforcement. During his first outing as a Fear minion, Hamner witnessed the killing of a police officer during a bank heist. Traumatized, Hamner broke free of his drugged conditioning, experienced a phenomenal surge in size and strength and captured the criminals.

Hamner became the world’s first 'super-hero,' Sledgehammer, and announced the creation of Furies. Furies is dedicated to battling criminals, especially those with incredible capabilities such as Fear. Initially funded by a government grant, Furies is now financially independent. Its revenue comes from an interest-bearing trust fund established by alumni Big Time and Icestar. The group has no official government sanction, but generally enjoys a strong working relationship with local, state and federal authorities.

    Setting

Furies is set in Big City, a large metropolitan city located in the eastern United States. It is the longest-running superhero organization in the world. A second hero group, Guardians, is based in San Francisco, CA. Members of the two groups have a good working relationship.
